From biological travels to energetic dance-pieces, these innovative shorts feature women in action. Finding inspiration in the corporeal, as well as in the decisions women are compelled to take, many of them engage with historical fears of active women and girls.

BRANCHES OF LIFE - Katerina Athanasopoulou (Animator)

Dir. Katerina Athanasopoulou

A woman sinks inside her unconscious, during a lung operation. The instruments are ready for the cut that will help her to breathe again – or fall into eternal sleep. We’re at that dreamy beginning of anesthesia, where your mind drifts helplessly into the darkness and hopes to see the light again.

POLLEN - Die Hexen (Sound Designer)

Dir. Helen Warner

She knew he would find her. It was just a matter of time. Many people before had told her that one day, he would come.

THE WAKE - Oonagh Kearney (Director), Maiken Háberg Hansen (Sound Designer) and Barbara Knezevic & Tara Lewis (Production Designers)

Dir. Oonagh Kearney

Using dance as a unique cinematic language, The Wake explores female dynamics inside the house.
Challenging the ways in which women and their rites of passage have been portrayed on screen, The Wake is revealed as a world of memory, joy, violence and transformation.

WOMENS’ CHRISTMAS NIGHT- Oonagh Kearney (Producer)

Dir. Oonagh Kearney

Oíche Nollaig na mBan offers a visual response to the life-force in Seán Ó’Ríordáin’s Irish language poem. Working with a schoolgirl choir and inter-generational cast of female performers, the film re-imagines ‘Women’s Christmas Night’ as a radically feminist and expressive vision of togetherness.

MAZE - Eve McConnachie (Cinematographer & Editor)

Dir. Eve McConnachie

Two young people discover each other as they explore a labyrinthine derelict swimming pool. A high-energy contemporary dance piece shot in Govanhill Baths, Glasgow, choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Sophie Laplane, with music by electro musician John Xela.

breathe - Lindsay Brown (Cinematographer)

Dir. Lindsay Brown

A teen seeks solace in a place where she can escape, as freedom doesn’t live in a place that’s closed.

TO THE ENDS OF THE FINGERTIPS - Roswitha Chesher (Sound Designer)

Dir. Roswitha Chesher, Sophie Arstall, Elizabeth Barker

Slipping through the fingers of time, we follow a search for freedom and fulfilment in this visually rich and surreal tale. A collaboration between filmmaker Roswitha Chesher and Average Height Ladies - Sophie Arstall and Elizabeth Barker. A Big Dance & Channel 4 commission.

MIMBRE’S WORLD - Loren Elstein (Production Designer)

Dir. Arthur Le FOL, Craig Bilham

Mimbre’s world is a dreamworld, a heartbeat, a journey that takes place between two sips of coffee. From the kitchen table to an enchanted ballroom, we step through the darkest corners of a magical world powered by the acrobatics of international company Mimbre.

THY NAME IS WOMAN- Suvi-Eeva Äikäs (Composer)

Dir. Tom Brereton Downs

Thy Name Is Woman is a series of 12 short films, exploring what happened to Shakespeare’s women after the curtain fell, whether that may be within the next few hours or years later. In Part 1, four female characters finally have their say.

LOVE-IN-IDLENESS - Kim Noce (Animator)

Dir. Kim Noce

Love in idleness it is a short animated film exploring the fleeting delusional loves relationship between Titania and Bottom. There is no story, no time and no roles: only raw emotions and sensations.
The film is made with charcoal on paper, the images are a series of drawings constantly erased and retraced.
