with the London Short Film Festival

A filmmaker, a critic and a programmer look at the gender gap, roll up their sleeves and get myth-busting on common misconceptions about female filmmakers and the struggles they face in making the transition from short films to features. Carol Morley (Dreams of a Life), Hannah McGill (Sight & Sound, The List), Lizzie Francke (Senior Production Executive at British Film Institiute Film Fund) and Kate Taylor (Independent Cinema Office) will take a series of familiar complaints, rip them to shreds, and then read the shreds like tea leaves, looking forward to a time when the question “How does it feel to be a woman filmmaker?” is never asked again.

Why DSLRs are changing DIY filmmaking from the avant garde to the mainstream

From Aardman Animations to many of Underwire’s submissions, the film industry is taking notice of the beautiful quality of projects shot on DSLRs. This workshop will identify key areas of growth for the technology; whether distributed online or in professional formats, DSLR shooting techniques are becoming the norm and we will trace the development of the style. Using filters, post-production techniques, and manual shooting settings, the session will also illustrate some of the best techniques to help productions achieve the camera’s sought-after professional and dreamy look. We will feature clips from up-and-coming artists as well as more mainstream productions to pinpoint and identify just why DSLR shooting is on the rise

    Still from Nocturn

    with S4London

A prize winning film from UnderWire 2011, “Nocturn” is being re-shown at the 2012 festival as a case study for the process of short film production, along with a series of Q&As from the team that made it. See the film’s trailer here.

Join writer/director and XX Award winner Leanne Welham, Producing Award winner Rosie Crerar, director of photography Kate Reid and make-up designer Kari Rodnes to talk about writing and making this great short film. 2011 Producing Award judges at Underwire Film Festival 2011 were impressed by Rosie Crerar “skillfully negotiating a night shoot in several locations and securing a top-class professional cast, while managing a relationship with the film’s funding bodies, UK Film Council and Screen South, throughout the production.”

S4 is an on-going screening night taking place on the third Wednesday of every month that forms an in-depth look at the craft of short films & their writing, shooting and production via a series of Q&As and screenings. See www.facebook.com/s4london and @s4london for more info.
